With respect to the ELA curriculum, this Learning Guide assists teachers in using the movie to provide context for the study of Jack London and particularly for his short story “To Build a Fire.” It contains opportunities for students to explore the ideas in the movie and its use of literary allusion. FICTION (SOAPS, DRAMAS, AND REALITY/SURVIVAL SHOW)Įmbedded in beautiful scenery and rich in the kind of music that has special appeal to young people, Into The Wild provides important life-lessons that: (1) risky behavior can have fatal consequences (2) parents need to be careful in raising their children (3) there are times when children need to forgive their parents (4) happiness and beauty must be shared to be fully enjoyed and (5) relationships with people are an essential part of life.FILM ADAPTATIONS OF NOVELS, SHORT STORIES, OR PLAYS.Not only that but, Jon Krakauer had real live people interviewed and quoted in the book, which makes the story much more credible.

It also makes sense that the book is more real and believable then the movie, because as most of us know, movie are sometimes far from accurate. A movie script is much shorter then a book, especially when the book is written on someone’s real life and what they went through. Also, unlike the book, the movie is narrated by McCandless’s sister, Carine, and tells the story in McCandless’s perspective rather then Jon Krakauer or even Sean Penn’s point of view.Īll in all, The results make sense. They show many scenes of the parents fighting and not getting along, which plays a big part in McCandless’s bold decision to leave home. The movie made McCandless seem more likable to me, however, it made his parents seem like they were the bad ones. Before watching the movie, I have to admit that I had not fully sympathized with Chris McCandless. In the paragraph above I mentioned that the book was similar to an article about the young man’s life, well the movie is very much like a celebration of it. A lot of compelling things happened to McCandless in between, but of course, the movie shows the most interesting parts of them. It starts at Chris McCandless’s graduation and ends at his death. Part of it is because Sean penn, the director of into the wild, only had 2 hours to represent McCandless’s journey. The movie, which I thought to be a great one, was naturally not as resourceful as the book. He explains that even though he did not disappear or die because of it, Krakauer, like McCandless enjoyed going out in the wild to challenge and test himself. This is very understandable because Jon Krakauer was a man of nature himself.

This book is the work of an author writing it from his own perspective and using a few people that Knew McCandless as a means to understand who he really was. He wrote about his behavior as youngster and how he developed into the man he was before his tragic death. Krakauer also investigated McCandless’s life since he was a kid, before and after his college graduation. John Krakauer wrote it in a very specific way, he found people that knew Chris for a decent period of time and directly quoted them in the book. When reading the book, I felt as thought I was reading an article or an examination on Chris McCandless’s life. One difference is the style in which they were made. I do not know with one I enjoyed more, however, they both have their differences and similarities. The second reason is just as simple, I loved the movie. The first reason is that I am normally a movie person rather then a book person, if I may put it that way, however The book was so good that like I said, I would read it again. Watching the movie was just as great, for two reasons. Reading into the wild for the first time was amazing for me, this book is a keeper and I will definitely read it again.
